Railings, stairs & lighting · Lake Stevens

The rail you hold, the stairs you trust, the lights that find them.

Aluminum, cable, glass and wood railings, code-compliant stairs and low-voltage lighting, on a new deck or an existing one.

Four railings, one rule: 36 inches and solid.

Modern white townhouses with wood accents
( 01 )

Aluminum

Powder-coated, no painting, the most common choice. Picket, or with a cable or glass infill.

( 02 )

Cable

Stainless cable between posts. Keeps the view, needs tensioning now and then, the lakefront favourite.

( 03 )

Glass

Tempered panels. The clearest view and the most wind block; costs the most of the four.

Stairs and lighting

Stairs built to code, lights wired low-voltage.

Stairs are where decks fail inspection: rise, run, landing size and handrail grip are all measured. We build them to the 2021 IRC with Washington amendments, every time.

Lighting is low-voltage: post caps, riser lights and under-rail strips on a transformer and timer. Added to a new deck or retrofitted to one you already have.

Railing and lighting questions

When does a deck need a railing in Lake Stevens?

Under the 2021 IRC as adopted in Washington, a deck 30 inches or more above grade needs a guard. That same 30-inch line is also one of the city's permit triggers.

Can you replace the railing on my existing deck?

Yes. Aluminum, cable, glass or cedar can go on a deck we did not build, as long as the posts and rim are sound. We check that at the free estimate.

Which railing is best for a lake view?

Cable keeps the view and costs less than glass; glass gives the clearest view and blocks wind. Aluminum picket is the most common and the easiest to live with.

Can deck lighting be added later?

Yes. Low-voltage post cap, riser and under-rail lights run on a transformer and timer and can be retrofitted to an existing deck.
